Climate Change To Blame For 75% Of Heatwaves

According to a new study, Global Warming, since the Industrial Revolution is responsible for at least three quarters of the extreme heat which is being witnessed in some areas today, and almost a fifth of the unusual heavy rainfall that is also being witnessed in certain areas.

Reto Knutti and Erich Fischer, who are both from the Institute of Atmospheric and Climate Science in Zurich, used modeling and simulations so as to compare weather extremes from the modern and pre-industrial era in a bid to figure out whether or not mankind is responsible for the warming that we currently are facing.

The two estimate that an average global warming of at least 0.85 degrees Celsius would be responsible for 18% of “moderate daily extremes” when it comes to rainfall and that 75% of heat waves.

As per the two,” moderate” extremes are events which are known to happen not that much, that is once in three years, as opposed to “very extreme” events which are known  to happen once in a period of 30 years, Fischer explained.

“We find that what used to be a one-in-three-year hot event occurs roughly four to five times in three years in today's climate," Fischer said.

"We then conclude that three to four of these occurrences that had not occurred in the pre-industrial world are attributable to... global warming."

The study had its findings published in the Nature Climate Change journal.

According to scientists, there has been an increase of 0.85 degrees Celsius on the global average surface temperature and this has been brought about mainly by humans who are constantly releasing earth-warming greenhouse gases into our atmosphere.
